Definitions
  • Advertisement: a data stream that has information about the broadcast name, configuration, type of audio streams etc.
  • Audio codec: an audio codec will compress the audio stream at the source (transmitter) in preparation for transmission and then decompress it at the receiving end (sink) for playback. The coded determine the sample rate (Hz), bit depth (bits) and bit rate (kbps).
  • Audio streams: usually left stereo and right stereo, independent but fully synchronized.
  • Assistant: a Bluetooth device, usually with a display, assisting a receiver to select the desired broadcast
  • Bluetooth Low Energy: more energy efficient than Bluetooth Classic
  • Broadcast: the transmission of audio content, such as music, speech, or other sound information, to a wide audience of an unlimited number of receivers. Usually consists of 2 audio streams and an advertisement stream
  • Broadcast Code: required to decrypt encrypted streams.
  • Codec: LC3 for LE Audio vs SBC for Bluetooth Classic
  • High Quality Public Broadcast Audio stream: support 48 kHz.
  • Latency: In the context of audio streaming, latency is the delay between the moment an audio signal is generated and when it is received by the end user. Minimizing latency is crucial for providing a smooth and immersive streaming experience.
  • Public Auracast transmitter: A Bluetooth product capable of transmitting a PBP-compliant Standard Quality audio broadcast and which is intended for deployment within a public venue, such as commercial
public address (PA) systems, televisions, and audio streamers. When set to transmit, the default
configuration for a public Auracast transmitter must include a Standard Quality Broadcast Audio stream.
  • Personal Auracast transmitter: A Bluetooth product capable of transmitting a PBP-compliant audio
broadcast and which is intended for personal use such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop, PC, home
television, or home audio streamer. All personal Auracast transmitters are required to be able to
transmit a Standard Quality Public Broadcast Audio stream but may default to transmitting a High Quality
    Public Broadcast Audio stream.
  • Public Broadcast Profile (PBP); defines how a Broadcast Source can use extended Advertising Data (AD) to signal that it is transmitting broadcast Audio Streams that can be discovered and rendered by Broadcast Sinks that support commonly used audio configurations
  • Receiver = a Bluetooth device that support Auracast, aka a sink (earbuds/ hearing aid/ headphones)
  • Sink device = Receiver (earbuds/ hearing aid/ headphones)
  • Standard Quality Public Broadcast Audio stream: supports 16 kHz or 24 kHz.
  • Source device: Transmitter (TV/ streamer/ smartphone/ laptop/ tablet). Must support Auracast Broadcast.
  • Transmitter: a Bluetooth device that support Auracast Broadcast aka a source.
  • User Interface: for Auracast it will usually be a device with display so you can find and select the Auracast Broadcast that you want.
