What is Auracast?
Traditional Bluetooth (also called Bluetooth Classic) is used for your personal devices with 1-1 connection like mobile to wireless headphones/ earbuds/ speaker/ hearing aid.
With the latest Bluetooth Low Energy Audio standard it opens up for sharing your music to an unlimited number of friends, listen to public announcements – for everybody (not only hearing impaired) and enjoy a theatre play, a concert.
The possibilities for assistive listening for so many more places than today since the broadcaster/ transmitter is so much cheaper and easier to install than a teleloop (sending audio to a coil in the hearing aids). The installation and use of a transmitter can be compared to a Wi-Fi access point. Add power, an audio input and a wireless audio stream will be available – Auracast.
The broadcast stream will have a name and the user can search for available streams on their assistant. Once a stream is selected, configurations are sent to the receiver which will receive the audio stream directly from the transmitter. The transmitter can have an odd number of receivers connected, corresponding to a radio station.
At the moment, 2024, the availability of Auracast products are still low but increasing. Number of locations with Auracast broadcast are very limited and you need to have a newer mobile that can be an assistant to select the desired broadcast and earplugs or hearing aids that are LE Audio and Auracast ready.
How Auracast works

What is needed to listen to an Auracast broadcast?
1. You need to be within range of an Auracast transmitter which is broadcasting (the source).
2. You need to have a Auracast ready receiver like ear plugs, speakers or hearing aids (the sink).
3. If your hearing device can’t select a stream/ broadcast, you need to have an Auracast assistant, typically a mobile phone or a tab which is Auracast Assistant ready.
